Welcome to the first edition of Pro-Wrestling WORLD-1’s: WORLD-1 On 1.
WORLD1Online.com’s Curt Lemon will interview a different W-1 fighter every week. This week we interview the 2009 Shinya Hashimoto Memorial Tournament winner Ruthless Ryan Sawyer.
This is a very interesting and revealing look into this young 18 year old prodigy.

W-1 On 1: We want to get right into the interview with asking you how it felt to win the second annual Shinya Hashimoto Memorial Tournament on August 28th in Morganville, NJ? You had to go through Australia’s Craven, current WORLD-1 heavyweight champion Steve Corino, and North American champion Alex Anthony to win the tournament.
RRS:  It felt Great to win the Hashimoto Tournament,  but I’m not surprised.  Craven, Corino And Anthony are all great fighters, and have done many great things in their careers, but when it comes down to it, it just shows that they couldn’t survive with the “Ruthless One”.

W-1 On 1: You defeated one of your original trainers, Steve Corino, by disqualification to advance to the finals and your other original trainer Ricky Reyes was the first winner of the Hashimoto Tournament. Since you hold a victory over Corino do you now plan on challenging Reyes to a one on one match?
RRS:  To be honest I haven’t given it much thought.  I have been thinking day and night about one person and one person only. Kevin Kannon.  I think it would be a great honor to fight Ricky.  After all he helped train me and I think we would have a great fight.

W-1 On 1: Most fans reading on WORLD1Online.com and various website don’t realize that you are just 18 years old and have already been wrestling professionally for 18 months. Looking back on pro-wrestling history one could compare you to the late Terry Bamm Bamm Gordy of The Freebirds. Gordy started at a very young age, but by the time he was 20 he had many championships under his belt. In a year and a half you have won the 3KWrestling Premier tag team titles, B4W tag team titles (now WORLD-1 tag team titles), and the UWC tag team titles. Are you looking to win your first singles title?
RRS:  Oh absolutely.  Since day one I always wanted to win a singles title.  I’m proud of all that I have done so far, and am very honored to be compared to Terry Gordy.  He is one of my idols and I aspire to be like him.
W-1 On 1: Now on to a sensitive subject. You trained in the WORLD-1 Revolution Dojo under Corino and Reyes and although nine original members signed up, only you and Kevin Kannon (Kevin Payne) graduated. And from there you and Kannon, although total opposites, became not only a tag team, but a very successful tag team but it all came to an end on May 31 when your team lost the W-1 tag team titles to Tommy Thunda and Chris Rockwell. Why did you turn on Kannon? Was this something you planned or did you just snapped?
RRS: The saying goes that opposites attract.  I assume that was the case here.  Me and Kevin both had very strong dreams of becoming wrestlers at the beginning of our training and quickly became friends.  He and I worked the hardest together, and found we could work together as a good team, hence “RuthlessPayne” was born.  The thing that made us successful was that we used each other to get to the top, but Kevin used me to stay at the top.  Every match after winning all those titles was me doing the grunt work and Kevin taking the credit.  He saw me as the background brute that would destroy the competition, and then he would come in and get the pin and the glory.  A guy can only take so much of not getting the respect and acknowledgement that he deserves.

W-1 On 1: We understand your frustration but what about the fans? You were loved by the W-1 followers and now you are right up there with Dark Horse Greg Spitz as the most hated wrestler by the fans and other wrestlers. Why should the fans be punished because you are upset with Kevin Kannon?
RRS: Because they didn’t give me the glory I deserved either!  Did you ever hear a “Lets go Ruthless” chant or a “Ruthless Ryan” chant when RuthlessPayne was in the ring… let me answer for you, no you didn’t!  it was always “Bring the Pain” or “lets go Kevin”.  They saw him as a great wrestler and I was his bodyguard.  They put him on the top of the wrestling ladder and now I’m going to knock him down and they are going with him.

W-1 On 1: On November 22 at WORLD-1 event ZERO1USA: Vast Energy Vol.1 in Neptune, NJ you will finally clash with Kevin Kannon in your first one-on-one contest. What can the fans expect to see out of this Grudge Fight? If Kannon defeats you will you try and work on your friendship with him? Or will you continue your reign of terror on W-1 fan favorites?
RRS:  The way I see it there are two outcomes to this fight.  One is that I get my vengeance and me and Kevin can go our separate ways.  And two is that I lose because I get carried away and get disqualified for what I put Kevin through.  that’s all I have to say about this subject.

W-1 On 1: One of the major motivation factors of the fighters at the November 22 event will be that they will all be fighting for a chance to travel to Japan to wrestle for Pro-Wrestling ZERO1. W-1 champion Steve Corino has done 72 tours, Ricky Reyes 5 (2 with ZERO1, 3 with New Japan Pro-Wrestling), and Alex Anthony toured last October. In fact the first WORLD-1 champion was Masato Tanaka. Are you going to be more focused on trying to impress the Japanese or will it be 100% Kevin Kannon in your sights?
RRS: I would like to say that I would be trying to impress them, but I have been dreaming of this fight with Kevin for many months.  I haven’t slept for a couple of nights because I have been waking up in cold sweats having nightmares of the horrors that Kevin could possibly go through.  That night will be a night to remember.

W-1 On 1: Speaking about Pro-Wrestling ZERO1 in Japan, Toshiaki Kawada recently defeated Masato Tanaka for the ZERO1 Heavyweight championship. Do you think that you are ready to make a challenge for Kawada or would you like to focus on the North American and/or WORLD-1 title first?
RRS: I personally don’t think that I am ready mentally of physically to fight Kawada.  I think he is a great fighter and would like to prepare myself before even thinking about it.

W-1 On 1: We here at WORLD-1 On 1 would like to thank this young budding superstar for his time. Mr. Sawyer do you have any parting words for the W-1 fans and Kevin Kannon?
RRS: as to the fans I want them to know that I don’t blame them.  They were brain washed by the cynical, filthy, back stabbing dog known as Kevin Kannon.  As for Kevin…. I hope you have prepared yourself for the 22nd.  I want you at your best, I want you at 100% so that there is no dispute of who the better man is.  Thank you for allowing me to explain myself.

This past Saturday evening in Tokyo, Japan the legendary Toshiaki Kawada defeated Masato Tanaka to become the 6th ZERO1 world heavyweight champion.

Every member of the WORLD-1 roster stuck close to their computers to see how this match would play out.  Tanaka, the 1st WORLD-1 heavyweight champion in 2004, had been on a hot streak, but Kawada had his number.

This is the first singles championship for “Dangerous K” since losing the All-Japan Triple Crown (NWA International, NWA United National, & PWF) to Satoshi Kojima in 2005.

Now during the November 22nd double header for W-1 the stakes will be higher. ZERO1 has been known for giving a foreign wrestler a chance at the ZERO1 championship (Steve Corino and Orlando Colon were both unsuccessful in 2009 against then champion Shinjiro Otani). Could Kawada’s first or second defense be against a WORLD-1 fighter?

Welcome to my first installment of my “Complete Mis-Adventures” where I plan to give you guys a little insiders look at what’s it like to be a manager in Professional Wrestling today, plus I will share what goes on around Steve Corino, especially the stuff that he doesn’t want everyone to know.

What a lot of people don’t know is Steve was the one who got me involved in Wrestling even the one who gave me the title “Certified Genius” Rob Dimension. Pro Wrestling Illustrated icon Bill Apter was the man responsible for introducing me to Steve, Steve probably hates him for it, but I am extremely thankful to “Wonderful Willie”. Apter is a fantastic guy, willing to help anyone and I have nothing but respect for him. I still, to this day, call him a friend even though I don’t see him often enough.

At the time Steve had just started the Pennsylvania Wrestling Federation (PWF) but was really looking for some help on all ends, running a promotion requires so many people’s help. I happened to walk in at the right time. Steve and myself became partners, later adding B-Real Bryan Riegel and having a hell of a run. Since day one, Steve has always had the love hate relationship with me…basically he loves to hate me. To this day, the random text messages I receive from him prove that fact. Anyways, we changed the name to the Premier Wrestling Federation and it was some of the best times I ever had. We are working at a mini shoot series that will give people a detailed look at some “behind the scenes” stuff plus our opinions on what worked and what didn’t also including some of the great matches. So many talented people walked through the PWF and a huge thanks goes out to everyone ever involved….hopefully this is catching everyone up with who I am.

Ok, so I have been referred to by Steve and many others as his official manager, I am honored to say the least and glad to be able to accompany Steve to the ring on a weekly basis. Plus, I figure I can shed some more light on some behind the scenes stuff that happens and give credit where credit due. Talking to Mr. Wrestling everyday can have a ton of laughs, mostly at my expense, but that’s cool.

This past weekend I was invited by Steve to attend the Legends of the Ring convention in North Jersey. He was coming in from the mid west on Saturday morning and told me to meet him at the con around noon. Ok, so far so good..this is the conversation via text we have:

Me : Hey, I’m here
Steve : I don’t care

So, I can already tell he is in a good mood. To most it would seem he was miserable, but knowing him for almost 9 years, I knew better. While I was waiting for Steve there was a few people I was looking forward to talking to, the first being Sir Oliver Humperdink. We spotted each other early on a spoke for a minute. I really wanted to pick his brain and see what tips I could get from him. He is a tremendous guy..very nice and approachable. I figured I would hook up with him later (unfortunately, time wasn’t on our side and it didn’t happen..but it will).

Steve gets there and does his normal hands shakes for everyone except me..acting like he doesn’t see me…amazing after all these years he still loves that. Anyways, we hang out with the guys from Wrestlingmarx.com and Mike Kauffman and had a blast. The highlight of my day was when Buddy Landel came around. He just knows how to work the crowd..shaking hands, brushing his hair and being the Nature Boy. This is where Steve and myself become 11 yr olds…we both are in awe of Buddy. We all chat for a second but know we are gonna see him later at the TWA Reunion show. My day is made!! (I am a total mark for Buddy) I remember watching Buddy at the Philadelphia Civic Center when I was probably 14yrs old..I always loved him, such a great heel..but he is really one of the nicest guys you could ever meet. We wrap up at the con since we were gonna try an get to TWA early in case they had some showcase matches… Mike Kehner texts says no showcases as we are close to the building. (I really respect Mike, he was one of the guys that was there to help me early on and gave me a lot of valuable advice….really one of the best guys to have in a locker room) So I pass along to Steve “I think that they are catering the show..with some food”  but we aren’t sure and hit a 5 Guys hamburger place, if you don’t know what it is..picture the most fatty, delicious burgers and tons of heart clogging fries…but needless to say..I say “yeah..cool..let’s eat”..who am I to turn down a heart attack waiting to happen?

We get to TWA and I’m blamed from the start about TWA having catering (since they had food for everyone)..ok, apparently, I am in the wrong, but..I’m always wrong. We see the Blue Meanie and some others and wait for Buddy and Al Snow, who are supposed to face later in the night, to show. We get some time to talk to Buddy and I can’t get enough…seriously..I tell Steve “Buddy is my new favorite guy”..he has so many stories and just LOVES being back in wrestling. Great to be around a guy like that, he makes you excited.

Al Snow gets there and we are set for our match later in the night. TWA was a full of some of the nicest guys you could ever meet, it was a 1st class promotion. Everyone had one purpose - go out and entertain the fans. I look forward to going back, currently scheduled for Dec 5th, stay tuned to Corinowrestling.com for updates. Steve lost the match but what a time we had. At one point, I was on the apron holding a chair and some kid grabbed it and ran off with it….so much for cheating…I still stick to the statement that “…..That kid used the chair” but Referee John Finnegan wasn’t hearing it.

After the show, we head out to Fuddruckers…which I totally LOVE. With none near me, it’s rare we get a chance to grab any. More red meat here we come. Steve and myself sit at the bar…the bartender asks..”Did you guys want a drink?”, we both say “no thanks”…well some guy at the bar starts telling us to “drink up…” and a bunch of other ramblings we couldn’t understand…so I tell the guy (pointing to Steve) “This guy is a raging alcoholic” and Steve goes one further…saying “once I start I won’t stop…I will start open mouth kissing this guy” (pointing to me…)…the guy gets the instant look of disgust and moves a few stools away from us.

Prior to Repercussions last month, WORLD-1 commentator Will Strouse sat down with the WORLD-1 heavyweight champion, “Mr Wrestling” Steve Corino to get his thoughts on the Hashimoto Tournament and his opponent later that evening. It was the first time in several months WORLD-1 cameras were able to get his thoughts directly, and not as fed too by Rob Dimension.

WORLD-1 News For Week Of October 12-18, 2009

Pro-Wrestling WORLD-1 got a huge shot in the arm by inking a deal with Pro-Wrestling ZERO1 in Japan to become the exclusive foreign talent agent for their company. Although ZERO1 has gone through problems over the last few years they are still running regular events and want to expand once again to bring in foreign talent.

Current W-1 heavyweight champion Steve Corino already has done 72 tours with ZERO1 from 2001 to 2009 plus North American champion Alex Anthony, Ricky Reyes, and President Kehner were in Japan last year at this time.  Over 20 W-1 alumni have toured ZERO1 over the years and it is W-1 intention to send more talent over the next few years with many first timers.

November 22 will be W-1’s first double header since 2007 when W-1 produced the King and Queen’s cup.  Both events will take place at the Neptune Fire House in Neptune, NJ with bell times being 2pm and 5pm.  Tickets are only $5 for each show! Both events will run no more then two hours and fifteen minutes (the main events will be based on curfew) so that our fans can enjoy the WWE’s Survivor Series on pay per view.

WORLD-1 heavyweight champion Steve Corino will be challenged by ISPW’s Ace Darling on the afternoon event. Darling, a long time Northeast mainstay, recently returned to the ring after a retirement looking better then ever.  He is looking to make his debut in W-1 a memorable one by defeating a man he hasn’t wrestled in almost ten years!  Darling will have comments for Corino on www.WORLD1Online.com in the coming weeks.

As for Corino’s opponent for the evening event, he will be matched up for the first time ever with the returning and current WWC World Jr. heavyweight champion Ricky Reyes. Reyes is upset that the W-1 title is not on the line and said that he will appeal to Pro-Wrestling ZERO1 in Japan to challenge Corino for his ZERO1 United States openweight title.  Corino, the champion since November of 2008, has rarely defended the title since winning it with his last defense being in March 2009 against Kamikaze in Tokyo, Japan. Rob Dimension has told WORLD1Online.com that Reyes has no room to complain about the title defenses and that he should take his fight to President Mike Kehner.

Speaking of Rob Dimension, Roxie Cotton wants a piece of him in the worst way.  Cotton, who surprised many but not only winning the Ultimate Rumble at Repercussions in September but then took Corino to a ten minute defense, was not amused by the sexist comments that Dimension made after the defense.  Her and her “special” friend Super Sweet have challenged Rob Dimension and his Monster C to a mixed tag team match at Vast Energy Vol. 2 on the 22nd.

But Cotton has a very important match during Vol.1 when she tangles with Annie Social to decide the new WORLD-1 Women’s champion.  The W-1 Women’s title has been dormant since 2006 when Japanese star Kyoko Kimura held the title.  Past champions include Sumie Sakai, Allison Danger, Amazing Kong (TNA’s Awesome Kong), and Natsuki Taiyo.  Social may have the upper hand because she has hired Rob Dimension to be her manager that afternoon!

Rumors are flying everywhere about the friendship or lack of friendship between North American champion Alex Anthony and Sean Haze.  Over the last few months, miscommunications not only in the ring but outside of the ring has led to a sort of rift between the two young stars.  Both men deny that there are problems but fellow wrestlers and fans can see that they are about to explode.  They will wrestle former WORLD-1 tag team champions Mark Mest and Greg Spitz in a match billed as “Loyalty Or Betrayal”. Will Haze and Anthony be able to coexist as a tag team or is their friendship torn apart?

Anthony also has his hands full on the afternoon event when he will defend the North American honors against PPW Worldwide champion Erico.  Erico, who had a great debut in August at the Hashimoto Memorial Tournament, is looking to add his first W-1 title to his internationally defended PPW crown.

WORLD-1 tag team champions Symbol consisting of Tommy Thunda and Chris Rockwell, managed by the very shady yet smart Richard Guille are not looking forward to their upcoming two out of three fall defense against W-1’s most popular wrestlers The Beast and GPS.  Esq. Guille (yes, he wants us to know he is a lawyer) said that there is no way that Symbol should have to defend the tag team titles against Beast and GPS again after successfully defending the titles against them on August 28.

Two huge grudge matches will also take place on November 22 as Ruthless Ryan Sawyer and Kevin Kannon will finally meet one on one.  It was Sawyer that turned against his former Ruthless Payne partner on May 31 after they lost the W-1 tag team titles to Symbol.  In the process, Kevin Kannon’s leg was broken and he was out of competition until September 26 defeating Greg Spitz in his return.  Kannon, who announced that he is changing his wrestling name to his given name Kevin Kannon, is looking for revenge against the 2009 Hashimoto Tournament winner.

The other grudge match is a return match between Damian Dragon and Reiko DMF. As we saw on August 28, Reiko put his hands on Dragon’s wife, Foxxy Foxx, and was about to assault her before he was run off by Dragon.  They met on September 26 but due to the actions of Esq. Guille, Reiko was successful.  This time Dragon is coming with his wife and even more focus. Folks, this could be ugly!!!

W-1 is also pleased to announce that our weekly TV show will be shown online through HybridEnt.tv in the next few weeks. W-1 Fighting TV is available on Ocean County TV every Wednesday night.

ZERO1 & WORLD-1 Announce Partnership

Pro-Wrestling WORLD-1 is very pleased to announce that they have become the exclusive foreign booking agent for Pro-Wrestling ZERO1 in Japan.

From 2002-2008, W-1 heavyweight champion Steve Corino held the job of being the Gaijin Agent and was responsible for taking over 70 different pro-wrestlers to Japan.  Now, the WORLD-1 company will be the go-to company for ZERO1 to get talent.

“It is very exciting for not just W-1, but for me personally. I have been a member of ZERO1 for over eight years and watched it go up and down. ZERO1 and W-1 will be a good partnership for everyone. I have a ZERO1 heart and hope that we can build ZERO1 and W-1 back into contenders.” said Steve Corino.
